Seminario: “S-GHOSTS: Self-Generating Housing, Open Space and Transportation in a Sprawling City“

Lugar: Sala de Seminario Centro de Modelamiento Matemático, Sexto Piso. Blanco Encalada 2120.

Fecha: 17 de marzo a las 9:00 hrs.

Expositor: The first part of the talk is a synthesis of various contributions of our team to the study of periurban spaces. These works combine various tools such as urban economics, fractals, cellular automata and spatial econometrics. In the second part, we investigate more specifically a model of urban growth that generates endogenously residential areas, open spaces, and a road network. The S-GHOSTS model is based on individualistic decisions of households who enter into the city while being in quest of amenities and competing on a land market. We next perform simulations to test the impact of various economic parameters such as income, preference for green and social externalities, transportation rate and taxes. Our analysis privileges the morphological properties of the emerging road network. Appropriate fractal measures are used to this end. One of the main results is the occurrence of phase transitions between linear and dendritic structures when varying the parameters. This is akin to what is observed in the literature with DBM (dielectric breakdown models).
Some interesting analogies between both models are elaborated. Finally, we provide some theoretical conditions for which the entering household will leapfrog and initiate periurbanization.
