Bachelor of Science in Geophysics

Academic Degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Geophysics

Duration:

8 academic semesters, day program, semi-flexible curriculum

Description

Geophysics is a discipline of Earth Sciences that employs physical measurements and physical mathematic models to export, analyze and comprehend the structure and dynamics of our planet, including its interior, the ocean and atmosphere. The complexity of the earth system, together with the inherent difficulty of observing and measuring natural processes at grand scale, sets up formidable challenges that geophysicists face and solve integrating theory with numeric modeling and data samples acquired with sophisticated measurement systems. The program offers students a solid base in physics and mathematics, as fundamental aspects of Geophysics.

Nobody understands the behavior of nature; earthquakes, tsunamis and climate change better than geophysicists, thanks to experimental training in phenomena related to structure, physics, and evolution of the earth.

Their work consists in understanding how nature works to describe and explain the dynamics of the ocean, atmosphere, the earth’s crust, the forces and interactions between them. These scientists integrate theory with numeric modeling, using sophisticated systems of measurement to collect data. How do they apply the information that they generate? Geophysicists in the area of Solid Earth analyze natural disasters and also serve as support in the search for mining and water searches. Geophysicists in the area of Atmospheric Sciences develop weather forecast models and evaluate the potential non-conventional energies, among others.  Both specialties are studied at the FCFM beginning with a Bachelor of Sciences in Geophysics, later allowing you to pursue a postgraduate degree in Geosciences.

Employment opportunities

Students of the Bachelor of Sciences in Geophysics are trained to successfully pursue postgraduate studies and/or advanced professional studies related to Geophysics, Geology and Geosciences in general.
