Laboratorio de Pirometalurgia y Caracterización Avanzada Minero / Metalúrgica

Descripción

El laboratorio cuenta con una superficie de 282 m2. Posee una sala de trabajo para memoristas y/o tesistas y oficinas de investigadores, tiene asignado un técnico de jornada completa y atiende dos cursos de pregrado por semestre y un curso de pirometalurgia avanzada por año, todos con una media de 20 alumnos.

Sus instalaciones permiten el desarrollo de investigación fundamental y aplicada relacionada con procesos a alta temperatura, con la caracterización avanzada minera / metalúrgica, el ensayo de materiales la determinación de propiedades de materiales metalúrgicos y la modelación y optimización de procesos metalúrgicos.

Investigación específica: (i) Termodinámica y cinética de metalurgia no-ferrosa a alta temperatura, (ii) Estudios relacionados con el comportamiento, identificación, caracterización y análisis de muestras minero /metalúrgicas: minerales, concentrados, ripios, matas, escorias, speiss y otras fases condensadas de procesos metalúrgicos, (iii) Recuperación de metales preciosos y elementos raros (REE), (iv) Control/eliminación de impurezas en procesos metalúrgicos industriales y (v) Aplicaciones, control y alternativas de procesos con simulación computacional y utilización de software computacionales tales como COMSOL, HSC y Calphad.

Pruebas y ensayos: (i) Pruebas pirometalúrgicas de concepto, (ii), Ensayos de: reología a alta temperatura, (iii) Toxicidad, lixiviación y TCLP-EPA, (iv) Ensayo a fuego para determinación de oro, (v) pruebas de magneto-hidrodinámica, (vi) Termogravimetría, (vii) Pruebas de secado, tostación, fusión, conversión y refino.

Caracterización y análisis: Microscopía óptica, XRF, XRD, Hiperespectral VNIR, SWIR, TIR, CIS para Hg, CO/CO2 y H2O(g).

  • Proyecto: “Desgaste de materiales refractarios en fundiciones de cobre”.
    Jul 2017 a la Dic 2019. Cooperativo entre CodelcoTech (IM2 en su comienzo) y el laboratorio de Pirometalurgia de la Universidad de Chile, considera la realización de pruebas experimentales estáticas y dinámicas de probetas refractaria y su posterior caracterización física y química.
  • Proyecto: “Recuperación de calor desde calcinas de cobre producidas por División Ministro Hales”.
    Mayo a Sept 2017. Cooperativo entre AmbarChile S.A. y el laboratorio de Pirometalurgia de la Universidad de Chile, considera el desarrollo de un arreglo experimental y pruebas de laboratorio concernientes a recuperar calor desde calcinas de cobre DMH a 700 oC.
  • Proyecto: “Caracterización de escorias de cobre y recuperación de cobre mediante su flotación”.
    Ene 2013 a Dic. 2015. Proyecto AMTC, investigación que fomenta la generación de proyectos cooperativos con la Industria, considera la realización de pruebas experimentales en el laboratorio de Pirometalurgia y posterior pilotaje, que permitan optimizar el circuito integrado de enfriamiento controlado de escorias de fusión, molienda, flotación y reincorporación de concentrado generado a la unidad de fundición. Dpto. de Ing. de Minas de la Universidad de Chile en colaboración con fundiciones de Chuquicamata, Potrerillos y Caletones de CODELCO así como Chagres de AngloAmerican.
  • Proyecto: “Potenciamiento de fundición Chuquicamata”.
    Ago 2013 a Julio 2015. Proyecto Cluster entre las empresas Codelco-Chuquicamata e Innovaxxion SpA. El proyecto consistió en la revisión de documentos y análisis ingenieril concerniente a clarificar los efectos de la fusión conjunta de, calcinas generadas por la planta de tostación DMH y concentrados Chuquicamata-RT, en la fundición Chuquicamata, unidades, UPC, quemador de concentrado modificado reactor Flash Outokumpu, operaciones Flash y CT2, caldera Flash, convertidores CPS y planta IX.
  • Proyecto: “Evaluación de Emisiones de SO2 en Secador de Concentrado”.
    2011. Proyecto desarrollado para la fundición Altonorte de Xstrata Copper que consideró toma de muestras y asesoría en terreno, análisis en laboratorio e informe de evaluación.
  • Proyecto: “Nuevo Proceso Continuo de Conversión de Mata a Cobre Blister”.
    Dic 2006 a Dic 2012. FONDEF de 4 años y extensión de 2 años que consta de dos etapas una de investigación y desarrollo de pruebas experimentales a escala laboratorio y otra posterior de pruebas a escala piloto-industrial en las instalaciones de la fundición Hernán Videla Lira de ENAMI ubicada en Copiapó, Chile.
  • Planta Piloto CCE en la fundición de Paipotes, ENAMI.
  • Julio de 2010 hasta Diciembre de 2014. Proyectos de refinación continua y de conversión continua en lecho empacado ENAMI, pruebas adicionales a escala laboratorio y guía de tesis de magister en el marco de dichos proyectos desarrollados en la Universidad de Chile.
  • Proyecto: “Informe, Antecedentes Técnicos y Económicos Para Elaborar una Norma de Emisión para Fundiciones de Cobre”.
  • 2010-2011. Proyecto desarrollado para el Gobierno de Chile CONAMA, Comisión Nacional de Medio Ambiente. El estudio constituyó la base para la implementación de la nueva norma de emisión para las fundiciones de cobre en Chile.

Proyectos en Caracterización Avanzada 

  • Proyecto: “Advanced Mineralogical and Metallurgical Characterization”.
    Septiembre 2013 a 2019. Etapa precompetitiva y actual aprobada de operación años (2016 a 2018). Proyecto I+D, CSIRO Chile 10CEII-9007 INNOVA CORFO considera la utilización de técnicas avanzadas de caracterización, hiperespectrometría incluyendo TIR, XRD, XRF, ICP y otros para la identificación de minerales en sondajes y materiales minero-metalúrgicos así como la realización de pruebas metalúrgicas y la obtención de modelos predictivos geo-minero-metalúrgicos específicos para empresas mineras.
  • Proyecto: “Hyperspectral study and data analyses to BHP”.
    2016, Over 3000 m drill core from Escondida: 1000 m were included in the precompetitive project and more than 2000 m are part of a new project, new activities will be supported with the profit. Over 1500 samples of dry pulp: scanning, analysis and correlation with cores.
  • Proyecto: “Hyperspectral study and copper proxy development for Los Bronces, Angloamerican”.
    2015-2016 Over 1270 m drill core from Los Bronces were analyzed by Hylogger3, CRF and XRD including advanced characterization in Australia.
  • Proyecto: “Hyperspectral study for Esperanza miner, AMSA”.
    2016 Hyper spectral analysis of 200 samples from Minera Esperanza and Hyper spectral analysis of 1000 of drill cores rejected samples form Antucoya.
    Comparison of Qemscan results of Centinela Mining with those obtained from Hy-logger3-XRD.
  • Proyecto: “Hyperspectral study and geometallurgical model approach for La Huifa, CODELCO”.
    2016 Hyper spectral analysis of 2000 of drill cores and development of a geometallurgical model based on hyperspectral, Qemscan, XRD, XRF and ICP data.
  • Proyecto: “Advanced characterization study for Antamina Mine”.
    2014-2015. Analysis of 200 chip samples from Peru to determine the clay mineral effect of the overall extractive processes.
  • Proyecto: “Advanced characterization for SERNAGEOMIN”.
    2014-2015. Short training in PLS modelling for Sernageomin staff. Characterization of sedimentary samples from the north of Chile. Hiperespectral study to corroborate the Mineralogical map corresponding to the current geochemical information of Arica, Pisagua e Iquique.

Proyectos en Tierras y Elementos Raros, RE and REEs 

  • Proyecto “Rare Metal Substitute Materials Development Project”.
    Ene 2015 a la fecha. Colaboración proyecto “Development of Technology for reducing indium usage in a transparent conducting electrode” desarrollado en las instalaciones de Tohoku University, Centro de Investigación NICHe (New Industry Creation Hatchery Center), Sendai, Japan.
  • Proyecto científico y colaborativo con la industria estimado en 1778 millones de yenes Japoneses (11023,6 millones de pesos chilenos) de financiamiento privado-estatal organización NEDO “New Energy & Industrial Technology Development Organization” de acuerdo a la siguiente distribución:
    Ministerio de Educación de Japón “Monbukagakushou”, Tohoku University 42% DOWA electronics, Japan 11.5% Mitsui Mining & Metallurgy, Japan 24% ULVAC, Japan 22.5%
  • Proyecto “Estudio de obtención de silicio a partir de sílice mediante carbotermia”.
    2017. Proyecto experimental a escala laboratorio desarrollado para la empresa Condor Dorado. Pruebas de carbotermia a 2200 oC en horno eléctrico de arco.
  • Proyecto “Estudio de la Metalurgia Extractiva del Escandio y sus Aplicaciones Industriales”
    Agosto 2011 a 2013. Proyecto desarrollado para la empresa Minería Imán SpA. concerniente a investigar e identificar rutas de extracción y recuperación incluyendo; concentración magnética, flotación, lixiviación, extracción por solvente, precipitación por cristalización de escandio a partir de diferentes fuentes minerales, especificando además usos y aplicaciones industriales del metal y de sus compuestos y benchmarking.

  • Proyecto: “Estudio de la Metalurgia Extractiva de tierras raras”.
    Junio a Dic 2012. Proyecto desarrollado para la empresa Minería Activa S.A. concerniente a investigar e identificar rutas de extracción y recuperación de tierras raras a partir de minerales de davidita y apatitos.
  • Proyecto: “Validación de Pruebas a Escala Laboratorio de Lixiviación Utilizando reactivos Alternativos”.
    2011. Proyecto desarrollado para privados que consideró la ejecución de pruebas a escala laboratorio de lixiviación en botellas agitadas con ácido sulfúrico y con un reactivo lixiviante alternativo de varios minerales oxidados de cobre bajo distintas condiciones de proceso. El proyecto generó un informe técnico y económico que compara la utilización del nuevo reactivo y la implementación de un proceso industrial alternativo de generación de cátodos de cobre a partir de óxidos de dicho metal.

  • Dragones: Caracterización Mineralógica Compañía Minera Dragones.
  • Semilla: Caracterización Avanzada de minerales de oro en la pequeña minería de Andacollo para establecer un proxy de identificación y tratamiento
